I am a huge fan of the late Andre Norton. This book was one of the first of her Witch World series I read, back in the 1980s. That book is currently packed in a box, so I decide to get the ebook.It involves a young man named named Kethan. His mother and a wise woman have conspired to birth a son who will be a powerful ruler under their control. To their chagrin, a daughter is born (women can't rule). So the switch the girl for a boy child at birth (Kethan). Kethan never seems to quite fit in. One day a merchant visits their keep, and he is presented with a belt with a buckle made of Jargoon. The belt is made from the pelt of a pard and the buckle shaped into a pard's head.
He finds that he can use this to change into a big cat. However, he still doesn't know how to control his abilities, and he has other problems. His rival wants to use his shape changing ability as an excuse to kill him. For his mother and the wise woman, this gives him a means of freedom they are determined to deny him.

The Jargoon Pard Witch World Series 2 High Hallack Cycle Book 1 eBook Andre Norton Reviews
I first read this as a teen. It has stuck in my mind since there. I have owned numerous copies over the years. I was so happy to see it finally published in e-book format. It reads a little different as an adult, but it is still a wonderful short story. I wish she had added more to this world.
Don’t remember this book
I'm actually grateful that I wasn't into the Witch World when it first came out. Now I get to read a whole new series by one of my favorite writers. How lucky is that?
This is presently my favorite author and I enjoy all her witch world series books. I downloaded 108 of her books in PDF however this title wasn't among them so I'm glad that I got this version in my Library. I love to read but the stories need to capture my attention or I go off to sleep. This story kept me awake.
I loved this book many years ago. I got this to revisit an old friend. I keep hoping this series will come out on audio.
Haven't read it for decades, but it still holds up. She's an amazingly good author for all ages. I' slowly rereading her books. I really recommend Andre Norton to anyone who loves a good story.
I've read this Andre Norton book probably more than any other of her many amazing books! A Sequel to the equally stunning Sci-Fi Fantasy "Year of the Unicorn", Pard follows the (mis) adventures of Kethan, heir to the throne of Car Do Prawn. Only, he feels out of place, his position coveted by many, some who want it outright, some who want to rule with him as a puppet on the throne.
One night he is given a magic belt, with the pelt and carved head of the Pard. The gift unleashes a curse upon him and he finds himself trapped as an animal. Car Do Prawn hunts him and he must run.
As he seeks assistance, a way out of the body of the cat, he comes to find much that has been hidden about his heritage.
